Getting Started

Before beginning your homeschooling program:
  • Submit the following to the superintendent of the school district of residence:
  • It is strongly suggested that the above documents be sent to the school district by certified mail, return receipt requested.
  • Retain a copy of all affidavit materials for your own files.
  • You can begin homeschooling after you have sent in the above paperwork.
During the legally defined school year (180 days of 900 hours for elementary/990 hours for secondary):
  • Maintain a log of the reading materials used by the child.
  • Retain samples of work done by the child - it is strongly recommended that samples be organized by subject.
  • If the child is in 3rd, 5th, or 8th grades arrange for an assessment in Reading/Language Arts, and Math, choosing an assessment tool from one of the state approved tests:
The Pennsylvania Department of Education has approved the following nationally normed standardized tests for use by home education programs if they choose not to take the statewide tests:

1. California Achievement Test
2. Comprehensive Testing Program (CTPIV)
3. Iowa Test of Basic Skills
4. Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)
5. Metropolitan Achievement Test
6. Peabody Achievement Individual Test – Revised Version
7. Stanford Achievement Test
8. Terra Nova
9. Woodcock-Johnson Revised Tests of Achievement III
10. Woodcock-Johnson IV 11. Wechsler Individual Achievement Test III (WIAT-III)

(Test must be administered by someone other than parent or guardian. Please see Important Dates page on this website to learn about our testing services.)

At the end of the legally defined school year (180 days of 900 hours for elementary/990 hours for secondary) or by June 30 (legal deadline), whichever comes first:
  • Meet with your qualified evaluator:
    • This person will review your log, portfolio, and test results and will also interview the student.
    • He or she will write an evaluation of the student's educational process and shall certify whether an appropriate education is occurring in the home education program and give this report to you.
  • Submit your evaluator's report to the Superintendent's office by June 30.
